Arona covers an area of about 82km2 which is about 4% of the total area of Tenerife, it contains the southernmost point of the island - Punta Salemas. Before the arrival of tourism in the 20th century, Arona was a sparsely populated area relying on fishing, agriculture, bananas and the production of cochineal for its economic survival. The 1960's and 1970's saw the arrival of a growing tourism industry and the emergence of some popular coastal resorts such as Playa de las Americas, Los Cristianos, Las Galletas and the Costa del Silencio, attracted by the wonderful climate, tourists arrive in their thousands to this area which is particularly appealing for winter holidays when the climate is pleasant.

Arona is located in the southern part of Tenerife, 81 kilometres from the capital Santa Cruz de Tenerife.
