Ciutadella ("Little City") was originally founded by the Carthaginians and was notably the seat of a bishop by the 4th century, later occupied by the Moors (called Madina al Jazira) it was finally reconquered for the Christians by forces under Alfonso II of Aragon, and Ciutadella became an important trading centre during the middle ages. Turkish forces under the infamous Barbarossa laid seige to the town in 1558 and the towns inhabitants were taken hostage and shipped to Turkey as slaves. Ciutadella was the capital of Menorca up until the 18th century when the British transferred the title to the natural harbour of Mahon (Mao). The port, along curving inlet, is lined with pleasure craft and local fishing boats, here you can watch the town's fisherman bringing in the days catch, much of which will later be cooked in the waterfront restaurants, it is a perfect spot to enjoy a local fish meal. The harbour area is the centre of Ciutadella's nightlife, such as it is, and the bars and discos attract the many visitors to the town.
