Alcanar is a town and municipality in the Montsia district, it has a population of 10,545, and a municipal area of 47.1 square kilometres. Originally part of the town of Ulldecona, Alcanar became an independent town during the 15th century. Defensive towers were built along the coast during the 16th and 17th centuries, to ward off attacks by raiding pirates.
Alcanar's beach area (Platja Alcanar) attracts plenty of visitors in the summer months, as does the neighbouring fishing village of Les Cases D'Alcanar. The coastal areas have been a popular area for summer homes and one of the oldest is Clos de Codorniu, which was formerly a residence of a King of Spain, Alfonso XIII.
Alcanar can be reached from the N-340, or from the AP-7 motorway, it is about 111 kilometres from the city of Tarragona.
