Port Aventura Salou
Best known as one of the largest theme parks in Europe, the Costa Dorada's Port Aventura (PortAventura) is actually a resort in its own right, boasting a water park (the Caribe Aquatic Park), a Beach Club, and three hotels as well as the Port Aventura Theme Park itself.
Located in Salou within the province of Tarragona, Catalonia, Spain, Port Aventura was developed and built by Universal Studios (together with the Tussauds Group and Anheuser-Busch), in 1997 it was renamed 'Universal's Port Aventura' after Universal Studios purchased most of the shares in the park, after which the hotels and water park were built, the park is now owned by the La Caixa banking group.
The theme park itself comprises a selection of rides, shows, restaurants and shops, the rides range from gentle to crazy, so there is something for visitors of all ages and levels of fearlessness. Some of the best known rides include the Dragon Khan rollercoaster, the Furius Baco, and the Hurakan Condor, there are also canoes for younger visitors and a Sea Odyssey.
The Caribe Aquatic Park is in a tropical setting with Caribbean feel and a great choice of slides and rides including the El Torrente, the El Tifón and the Rio Loco.
The Beach Club is located right next to the sea with views over the Playa Larga de Salou beach, it also features the exclusive Restaurante Lumine.
Port Aventura Hotels: The hotels comprise the Hotel El Paso with a Mexican feel, the Hotel PortAventura in a typical Mediterranean setting and the Hotel Caribe, with of course a Caribbean theme, all the hotels have a 4 Star rating.
Port Aventura Markets: For some retail therapy you can visit some of the local street markets the main weekly market in Salou is on Mondays, you could also try La Pineda on Fridays, Cambrils on Wednesdays and Tarragona on Thursdays.
Port Aventura Fiestas: To experience the feel of a Spanish fiesta you can head into Salou where the Fiesta de San Juan takes place in June, the Summer Fiesta in August and the Catalan National Day in September. Real fiesta hounds could visit Tarragona the provincial capital where you could enjoy the Carnival (February), the Fiestas de Santa Tecla (september) and the Fiesta of St Magi in August.
Port Aventura Camping: A good base for campers wishing to visit Port Aventura is the Tamarit Park Camping site located at Platja Tamarit Ctra Nacional 340, Km 1172, 43008 Tarragona (Tel: 0034 977 650 128).
Port Aventura can be reached via the C-31b, which can be accessed from the A-7 (E-15) motorway, it is beside the coastal resorts of Salou and La Pineda and is around ten minutes drive from Reus International Airport and one hours drive from Barcelona airport.
