Totana - Murcia - Spain

Located south-west of Murcia just off the A-7 (E-15) motorway the town of Totana has a history of ceramics and pottery production going back to the times of the Moors. Situated in the heart of Murcia's spectacular sierra country, Totana is a perfect location for walking enthusiasts and a good place to start is the Sierra de Espuña an area of rugged and mountainous countryside with fantastic wildlife, here you might spot a wild boar or even an eagle.

With a population of approximately 28,000 and a municipal area of 287 km2 Totana is a medium sized town which enjoys a dry Mediterranean climate and an average annual temperature of about 18 degrees Centigrade. The temperature in the mountains can often fall below freezing in the winter time.

There are more than 20 potteries operating in Totana, producing a staggering variety of ceramics, pots, bowls and earthenware storage jars, many still fired in the traditional Arab type kilns. Apart from pottery Totana is also important for agriculture, poultry and pig-farming.

Totana is located near to Aledo and Alhama de Murcia and can be accessed from the N-340a or from the A-7 motorway.
