LA MANGA - THE SLEEVE

La Manga on the Costa Calida, is actually a narrow strip of land some 22 kms long, with an average width of 300 metres which separates the Mediterranean Sea from the Mar Menor.

Until 1863 this strip of land belonged to the state, but was then sold by public auction, by a government which was trying to pay off its debts.

The area remained unspoilt until the 1960’s when La Manga was discovered by the tourist industry.  In total La Manga has more than 40 kms of sandy beaches.  Those facing the Mar Menor, such as El Galan and Pino are very tranquil, whilst the Mediterranean facing beaches, like Pedrucho and El Arenal are livelier.

La Manga is a tourists paradise, very busy with the hustle and bustle of the summer months with its thousands of visitors, but further north on the Mar Menor side it is more peaceful.  At this northern end we enter the area of canals known as Veneziola, with its bridges.  Here one can still witness the old traditional fishing techniques.  Finally, we come to the old reed beds, Las Encanezadas, where the waters of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean merge together at last.

It is a landscape of great beauty and an environment unique in Europe, with many very special qualities and features, which are never ending and yet change day by day

La Manga Club

Set on the lower slopes of the pine covered Murcian hills, looking out over the crystal clear waters of the Mar Menor and the Mediterranean Sea, La Manga Club covers an area of some 1400 acres of rolling countryside, dotted with thousands of palm trees.
The club was the brainchild of a group of American entrepreneurs in 1971. It has its own private beach "La Cola" behind El Fersestal, and another out at Mar de Cristal. Here one can enjoy a great diversity of water sports on the calm sea of the Mar Menor.
During the early 1970's the club first hosted the Spanish Open Golf Championships at La Manga, the first step in the consolidation of the La Manga Club as one of the premier sport and leisure complexes in Southern Europe.
Leisure and pleasure seekers from all over the world are drawn to La Manga with its wonderful climate, to enjoy a unique experience at this at this truly great resort.
