Sierra de Espuna - Murcia - Spain

South-west of the city of Murcia lies an area of rugged and mountainous countryside known as the Sierra de Espuña. Now a designated Natural Park the Sierra de Espuña is a perfect location for walkers and nature lovers. The park boasts a huge variety of plant and animal life and visitors may be lucky enough to see a wild boar, a mountain cat or maybe an eagle.

The best place to begin a visit to the Sierra de Espuña is the visitors centre - here you will be able to pick up maps of the area, information and guides to the various walking trails. There are a large number of walking trails for walkers of all capabilities.

Be sure to visit the "Pozos de la Nieve" (snow houses) these curious round brick structures were formerly used for storing snow and ice.

In the eastern area of the park lies a section known as "the badlands" (tierras malas), an area of sparsely vegetated rock forming a moon-like landscape.

The best way to get to the Sierra de Espuña is via the town of Alhama de Murcia. This road takes you to the visitors centre and onwards into the park itself.
