Santiago de la Ribera

The lovely town of Santiago de la Ribera comes under the municipality of San Javier and lies within the Murcia region of Spain on the Costa Calida. Santiago de la Ribera is one of the beautiful and popular resorts lying on the Mar Menor ('Lesser Sea') which is the largest salt lake in Europe and boasts some fine beaches and shallow , safe bathing waters - ideal for family vacations..

Santiago de la Ribera grew from a small hermitage built in 1888 and is named after Saint James the Apostle. The hermitage was founded under the orders of Friar José Maria Barnuevo Rodrigo de Villamayor, who was a Knight of the Military Order of Santiago which is how the town came by its name.

This fishing village grew as a prime holiday destination for wealthy Murcians who built their houses along the coast. Santiago has a very lovely promenade flanked by attractive palm trees. Today Santiago is still popular with the Spanish for their vacations but also attracts tourists from all over Europe and although it has a modern air, it has still maintained its ‘fishing village’ atmosphere.

The promenade (El Paseo Colón) passes the Club Nautico and leads to an area known as La Ciudad del Aire ('City of Air') which was so named because many of the pilots and their families from the nearby air base lived there.

Santiago de la Ribera has its fair share of fiestas and celebrations including the Three Kings (January), the festival of the Virgen del Carmen (July) and the huge Festival of Santiago (July). Santiago de la Ribera also holds the National Folk Festival.

Santiago de la Ribera has about 4 kilometres of fine sandy beaches which can be enjoyed by holidaymakers and these can get very busy during the hot summer months when both Spanish and international tourist arrive to enjoy the sunshine and the warm waters of the Mar Menor. Santiago de la Ribera looks across the Mar Menor to the narrow strip of land known as La Manga - a famous and exclusive sports resort.

Santiago de la Ribera boasts a popular water-sports centre and sailing club and has a good selection of shops, bars and restaurants.

Some nearby places to visit include - San Pedro del Pinatar, Roda, Los Alcázares, Sucina and the ancient Cartagena.
