Roda: Haunt of the Royals
Roda is located in the municipality of San Javier and is situated just a few minutes drive from the beautiful beaches of the Mar Menor lying inland between San Pedro del Pinatar and Los Alcázares in the region of Murcia.
This is an agricultural area particularly specialising in the growing of horticultural produce and citrus fruits. Roda is set apart from mass tourism which enables life still to be lived in a traditional way as well as being steeped in history.
In 1265 King Jamie 1 of Aragon, at the request of his son-in-law Alfonso X, re-conquered the kingdom of Murcia. One of his noblemen at that time was Count Guillen of Roda from Roda-de-Isabena in Huesca. The King, out of gratitude for his support and the need to repopulate and defend the land, granted Count Guillen an estate of over two thousand hectares.
In the current stately home and estate, dating from the 18th Century, one can still see the former 15th Century fortress and some preserved walls and pavements.
For centuries the estate has stayed within the Roda family and retained its close links with the Spanish monarchy even today; King Juan Carlos and Prince Felipe have both been distinguished guests.
