Santiago de la Ribera, typical of the area, was formerly just a tiny fishing village with some interests in agriculture. It later grew due to the building of summer homes for rich Murcians who needed a cool retreat from the oppressive heat of the city of Murcia during July and August. The cool sea breezes, fine sandy beaches and safe bathing waters still attract them today. The town also attracts water sports enthusiasts who enjoy the safe Mar Menor waters.
