The 2nd largest island in the Mediterranean Sea after Sicily, Sardina is located off the west coast of Italy and has an area of 24,090 km2 and a population of approximately 1,665,000. Probably settled since the Palaeolithic Period, Sardinia's first civilization seems to have been around 1500 BC, when known as Hyknusa by the Mycenaeans, it was populated by some peoples expelled from Egypt, among its earliest settlers were a race known as the Nuraghe. From about 1000 BC, ports were established along its coast by the Phoenicians and trade was carried out with the Greek island of Crete, during the days of the Roman Empire, Sardinia was populated by a wide variety of peoples. Later settled by Vandals, Moors and Byzantines it came under Spanish control in 1324, it changed hands frequently over the ensueing centuries and finally gained its constitutional autonomy in 1948. These days Sardinia's economy relies mostly on tourism, and it has become a popular holiday destination, particularly for Europeans, some of its most popular locations include Alghero, the Capo Caccia, the Neptun Cave, the Costa Smeralda in the north-west, the Gennargentu mountains and the Gulfs of Oristano and Cagliari. The capital Cagliari is in the south of the island.
