A popular holiday destination in the Mediterranean Sea, Cyprus attracts over 2 million visitors each year. A former British colony, Cyprus gained its independence from Britain in 1960, it is now one of Europe's premier tourist destinations.

Cyprus has a resident population of around 800,000 and has a long and interesting history, being settled since around 10,000 BC, it has many sites of archaeological and historical interest. Sun lovers will head for the splendid beaches of the more popular coastal resorts.
