The island of Jamaica is located 145 kilometres south of Cuba and is the third largest island in the Caribbean Sea, it has a population of around 2,651,000 and has an area of 10,991 km2, it is around 234 km long and up to 80 km wide, the main languages are English and Jamaican Patois, the name (Xaymaca) means "Land of Wood and Water".
Jamaica was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494 after he landed at Dry Narbour (now named Discovery Bay), the island was subsequently claimed for Spain and the first settlement established at Sevilla which suffered frequent pirate attacks and was later abandoned in favour of Spanish Town. The Spanish were later driven out by the English and they took over control of the island in 1655. Jamaica finally gained its independence in 1962
Jamaica has become a popular holiday destination and many thousands arrive each year to enjoy the sugary, soft, white beaches and the relaxed lifestyle. There is plenty to see and do in Jamaica apart from simply relaxing on the beach and visitors should take some time out to explore the island. Why not visit a crocodile farm? There is one called Jamaica Swamps Safaris, or visit one of the huge sugar plantations with their colonial houses, such an important part of Jamaica's history, or a perhaps a visit to the Bob Marley Museum, don't forget a trip to the capital Kingston.
