Often called "The Spanish Algarve", the Costa de la Luz (Coast of Light), borders its Portuguese neighbour and shares a similar climate. The region covers a distance of about 300 kilometres and comprises varied landscapes with numerous superb sandy beaches, pine clad cliffs, vineyards and picturesque villages. It also features Europe's oldest inhabitied city, Cádiz, in myth founded by the Greek hero Hercules but in reality established by the Phoenicians in 1104 BC. The area name comes from the quality of its light, pure and unpolluted, it is especially renowned for its spectacular sunsets. Areas such as Tarifa, in the south east of the region, are popular for water sports, in particular surfing and windsurfing, boasting ideal conditions for these sports. The main airports for the region are at Jerez and Seville.
