Alcantarilla has a history going back to prehistoric times when the Iberians and Romans first settled in the region, however the first recorded mention of the town was in the 12th century when it was controlled by the Moors during their occupation of the area. Alcantarilla suffered the Inquisition during the 18th and 19th centuries and the scars still remain on the psyche of the town, reflected in the "burning of the witch" ceremony which takes place during the May Festival.

Alcantarilla is located on the N-340a and the N-344 and is about 30 kilometres from the airport at San Javier.
