Towns of Alicante - Algorfa

Algorfa Alicante - The sleepy Spanish village of Algorfa lies between the towns of Rojales and Almoradi on the Southern Costa Blanca. Surrounded by orange and lemon groves, Algorfa is one of the numerous citrus farming villages of the region, sitting as it does on the fertile land of the Segura river valley. Only a small village with a population of under three thousand, Algorfa enjoys some fine views of the surrounding countryside, mountains and the sparkling blue Mediterranean.

From evidence uncovered by an archaeologist of Orihuela in 1903, there seem to have been settlements on the land around Algorfa in about 3,000 BC. The discovery of implements and human remains are an important clue to Algorfa’s first inhabitants.

Founded in 1328 when Alfonso II granted Algorfa a privilege and made it part of the kingdom of Valencia, the original village consisted of 15 properties housing 15 families. This privilege was later withdrawn by Felipe V at the end of the War of Spanish Succession 1714, the privilege was however restored before the end of the eighteenth century by king Carlos IV at the request of the Marquesses of Algorfa.

Present day Algorfa is a quiet and friendly place, village life centres mostly around the charming village square where most of the local festivities and activities are held. The square is also the location of the Town Hall (completed in 2004), the police station and the church plus several bars and restaurants where locals and visitors alike can enjoy a cooling drink and watch the world go by. Visitors are always given a smile and a warm welcome in Algorfa.

Sunshine is the order of the day in Algorfa and its inhabitants can expect to see over 300 days of it during an average year. Rain is scarce and usually limited to the cooler winter months (the most common months for rain being February and November), and an average yearly temperature of about 19 degrees centigrade is normal.

Places of interest around Algorfa include the unusual nineteenth century neo-gothic church, situated outside the village on the road to Benejuzar and well worth a visit, the Parque Natural de Las Lagunas de La Mata y Torrevieja - the protected Natural park of the salt lakes with its rich bird life and lovely walking routes, the cave houses at Rojales and the unique Shell house nearby and the Palace of the Marquis de Fontabla near Jacarilla with its substantial gardens.

The busy Algorfa Sunday market is also a “must visit” place whilst in the village a good place to find some great value local products.

Those with a little more energy to spare may want to take advantage of the local recreation centre with a host of sporting activities catered for including swimming, squash, tennis and five-a-side football, there is also a children’s play area included. Golfers will no doubt want to try out the La Finca Golf Club with its 18 hole (Par 72) championship golf course designed by Jose Gancedo and opened in 2001. The course is set in beautiful, natural surroundings with several lakes to bring variety and difficulty to the game. The usual cost of a round is 75 euros (2007). In the hot summer months a trip to the Aqua Splash Park at Quesada would be a pleasant way to spend an afternoon.

There are no beaches in Algorfa, as it is an inland village, but just down the road at Guardamar del Segura you will find miles and miles of excellent sandy beaches together with some superb water sports facilities. The surrounding coastline is renowned for its crystal clear water and there are some wonderful spots for scuba diving and snorkelling.
