San Miguel -
San Miguel is a small Spanish town located just inland from Torrevieja and the Orihuela Costa on the southern Costa Blanca, Spain - part of the Alicante province within the Communidad de Valencia.
Originally just a small village San Miguel has grown considerably in recent years due to the huge increase in property development along this part of the Spanish coast, the demand for holiday homes and for re-location in the sun has increased and San Miguel has been affected in a similar way to many other towns and villages in the region.
Though little is known about the distant history of San Miguel, it is thought that the first building in the area was a hermitage constructed in about 800 AD, the hermitage subsequently became a Convent and Monastery and became home to Carmelite nuns and Augustine friars. The Convent was sacked in 1407, resulting in the foundation of the Brotherhood of San Gines, formed to protect the Convent against raids from Barbary Pirates.
The original parish church (dedicated to Saint Michael) was constructed in around 1600, due to poor construction methods it was later re-built in 1689-1719. The town was severely damaged (as were many others in the area) by the destructive earthquake of 1829. San Miguel became an independent municipality in 1955.
Present day San Miguel has a decent selection of bars, restaurants and shops and is just a ten minute drive from the superb 'blue flag' beaches of the popular Orihuela Costa (Cabo Roig, La Zenia, Playa Flamenca, Punta Prima etc). There are 3 excellent golf courses nearby including the renowned Villamartin course (which hosted the 1994 Mediterranean Open), the others being Campoamor and Las Ramblas.
San Miguel is situated on the CV-941 and the CV-95 and is easily accessed from the Orihuela Costa and Torrevieja areas, and also from the AP-7 motorway which runs close by (exits at Dehesa de Campoamor and La Zenia).
