Penyal D'Ifach
Costa Blanca Tourist Attractions - Penyal D'Ifach

Rising horizontally from the sparkling azure blue Mediterranean sea, the amazing sheer rock formation known as Penyal D'Ifach guards the bay of Calp. One of the most famous and well known sights along the Costa Blanca, Spain, Penyal D'Ifach is a protected Natural Park.
In past times the precipitous rock was used as a watchtower - an ideal vantage point to spot raids from Berber pirates and warn the local inhabitants. Nowadays Penyal D'Ifach is a refuge for many plant and bird species and though it is a popular spot for tourists, a limit is put on the number of visitors allowed to climb the rock at any one time (so be sure to arrive early during the busy summer months). There is a set out walking trail which takes you up to the summit by means of a tunnel built in 1918 to make the climb easier, but be warned, although the walking is comfortable on the lower slopes, it becomes more hazardous the higher you climb. The summit of Penyal D'Ifach offers spectacular views of the surrounding coastline and makes it well worth the effort of the 330 metre climb.
Some rare bird species can be seen on the rock including Audouin's gull, Eleanora's falcon and the peregrine falcon. There are also numerous species of wild flower including one orchid species found exclusively only on Penyal D'Ifach.
Penyal D'Ifach is easily reached via the CV 746 at Calp which branches off the main coast road - N332. Also handily close by is the AP-7 motorway, leave at junctions 63 or 64.
Whilst you are visiting the fabulous Penyal D'Ifach do not forget a trip into the nearby resort of Calp, originally a medieval fishing village, now a major tourist destination because of its excellent sandy beaches and fantastic water sports facilities.
