Bougainvillia is a species of flowering plant and was originally a native of South America particularly Brazil where it was discovered in 1768 by a French admiral called Louis Antoine de Bougainville (after whom the plant is named). Now grown and cultivated in warm climates all over the world. The brightly coloured "leaves" are actually papery bracts which surround the tiny white flowers of the plant.
